Meta is experimenting Reels on Meta Quest
Initially created by Instagram to rival TikTok, Reels has now been introduced on Facebook as well. Meta, the parent company, is now experimenting with Reels on a new platform – the Meta Quest. While the VR headset is primarily used for browsing the internet, playing games, and watching movies, the addition of Reels, which are typically viewed vertically, offers a unique viewing experience compared to the more flexible and screen-wide options available.
Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the update in a 13-second video on Meta’s Instagram channel. It included Reel influencer Austin Sprinz’s Instagram account, which he used to visit the world’s deepest pool. Immersive video is a good choice for VR, taking the viewer underwater into a seemingly bottomless space – and certainly better than a cooking or dancing reel.
The Reels update comes ahead of Meta Quest 3’s fall release and follows Apple’s new AR/VR Vision Pro headset announcement. While pricing for the Quest 3 starts at $499, compared to the Vision Pro’s $3,499, the pair aren’t exactly in the same category. Meta’s VR headset series was first released as the Oculus Quest and later the Oculus Quest 2, before the second generation model was renamed the Meta Quest 2. Meta Quest Pro followed shortly after the name change. As for Reels, there is no timeline as to whether or not it will leave beta and become available on the Meta Quest headset.
